Inclusive Sessions

Every Tuesday 9:30am–11:30am, we run a dedicated Inclusive Borrowing Session with our Toy Librarian. The music goes off, the space gets quieter, and there’s no rush. Just you, your child, and someone who genuinely loves helping families find the right toys.

These sessions are made possible through the Toy Libraries Australia “enhancing services for developmental delay and disability” grant.

Who’s welcome

All members are welcome at Inclusive Sessions — these sessions are just especially designed for families who benefit from a calmer, quieter borrowing experience, including:

  • Children with disability or developmental delay — no diagnosis needed
  • Children with sensory sensitivities
  • Families who find busy, noisy spaces difficult to navigate
  • Anyone seeking one-on-one time with the Toy Librarian to find toys that match their child’s needs, goals or interests
  • Support workers and allied health professionals are welcome to attend alongside families

You don’t need a referral, a diagnosis or a reason.
If a quieter session would help your family, this is for you.

What to expect

The space

  • Quieter than our regular sessions — no background music
  • Fewer families browsing at once
  • Ear defenders and fidget tools available in-library
  • A short play area so kids can try toys before you decide
  • No time pressure — browse at your own pace

The toy librarian

  • On the floor the whole session to support you
  • Can help you find toys matched to your child’s development goals, interests and sensory profile
  • Knows the collection inside out — from speech and language to coordination, sensory seeking and imaginative play
  • Can make recommendations to support goals set by allied health professionals

Visiting the Toy Library – Social Story

We have a visual social story to help children with additional needs know what to expect before they arrive. It covers the car park, walking in, choosing toys, checking out and going home — with simple language and pictures.

Download it, read it together before your visit, or share it with your child’s support team.

Toy recommendations by developmental goal

Our Toy Librarian (and committee) have put together guides to help you find toys that support specific skills and interests. Each guide includes toy codes you can search in our catalogue.

  • Speech and language development
  • Sensory seekers — big body movements
  • Sensory seekers — hands-on sensations
  • Sensory seekers — visual exploration
  • Coordination
  • Why we love: Magnetic Tiles
  • Why we love: Puppets
  • Why we love: Water Play
  • School-aged kids

Can’t make it in?

If coming into the library isn’t possible, Click & Collect lets you reserve toys online and pick them up from our lockers — no need to come onto the floor.
